Join the ADHO Executive Board and Committees

The Alliance of Digital Humanities Organizations (ADHO) seeks nominations of committed individuals who would like to actively help further DH in all its breadth and diversity for the following volunteer positions:

All of these positions have a global reach, but involve working closely with small, supportive groups of volunteers, including the ADHO Constituent Organization Board (COB), Executive Board (EB), and a variety of standing committees. We welcome nominations of people from any region of the world, and with a variety of levels of experience in the ADHO community.

All terms will begin 1 September 2022. A description of the roles is below. Members of any of the ADHO Constituent Organizations (COs) and Associate Organizations (AOs) are eligible. Interested applicants are highly encouraged to contact secretary@adho.org, or any of the current office-holders to discuss the nature of these positions.

The ADHO Communications Officer is a member of the Executive Board and is responsible for facilitating the organization’s public communications and guiding communications strategies and leading the Communications Team. The Officer’s workload is typically 3-5 hours per week with an increase in workload leading up to and during the ADHO conference. The Deputy Communications Officer term is one year, after which the deputy becomes Communications Officer for two years.

Responsibilities include:

Conference Coordinating Committee (CCC) Deputy Chair (Incoming)

One of ADHO’s most visible activities is its annual international conference, usually held in July or August in venues around the world.

The Conference Coordinating Committee is responsible for developing, improving and maintaining the ADHO Conference Protocol and accompanying guidelines, and coordinating the annual conference. The CCC is overseen by a Chair, a Deputy Chair and an Incoming Deputy Chair, all appointed by the COB. This position has a three-year term with the first year as Incoming Deputy Chair, the second year as Deputy Chair, and the final year as Chair.

The role of Incoming Deputy Chair would be appropriate for people somewhat new to the ADHO community who are willing to serve and have the benefit of two years experience before becoming Chair. Therefore, no previous experience attending an AHDO conference is necessary and we encourage anyone who is interested and willing to learn during a three year commitment.

Responsibilities (in collaboration with the Chair and Deputy Chair):

  • Maintaining the Conference Protocols and ensuring that they are followed by the Local Organizers (LOs), Program Committee (PC), and others involved in the annual Digital Humanities Conference;
  • Issuing the call for bids for the ADHO international conference, providing detailed information to those who are interested in bidding for the conference, providing feedback to initial bids; determining whether revised bids should be passed on to the Constituent Organization Board (COB) and the Executive Board (EB), and making recommendations to the COB and EB about revised bids;
  • Maintaining an annually updated list of the pool of reviewers for the conference
  • Working in consultation with the PC to determine the form of the proposal review process (e.g., double-anonymous, reviewer-anonymous, or open).
  • Maintaining the draft-model call for proposals from which the PCs draft each year’s individual CFP, and ensuring email lists are established for each year’s PC and that PC members are promptly subscribed to it;
  • Reviewing requests for additional languages to be added for a particular conference and innovations to the conference format;
  • Reviewing requests for in-name sponsorship of digital humanities conferences, and approving presentations by sponsors together with the PC;
  • Maintaining the draft-model report of the conference, receiving preliminary and final reports from LOs and PC chairs, and conveying them to the COB and EB for review;
  • Conducting a brief survey of conference participants after its conclusion.

Awards Committee Chair

The Awards Committee Chair leads the ADHO Awards Committee (composed of delegates from the Constituent Organizations).  ADHO awards honor members of the DH community by acknowledging outstanding scholarly, pedagogical, and other contributions in the digital humanities, and through the awards program promoting the inclusivity and visibility of the digital humanities community worldwide. Chairs serve 3 years with the possibility of renewal.

Responsibilities include:

  • Organizing the nomination and selection of people for ADHO awards by the members of the Awards Committee;
  • Reviewing the protocols for each ADHO award and proposing changes from time to time as appropriate;
  • Ensuring appropriate publication of the papers prepared and delivered by award recipients;
  • Consulting with the Executive Board on important strategic, operational, and management issues relating to the planning and operation of the awards processes;
  • Regularly reporting on Awards Committee activities to the Executive Board;
  • Considering possible new awards or related ways to encourage new forms of activity in the digital humanities, e.g. encouraging participation by new scholarly communities.
