Conference Bursary Awardees about DH2025: Trudie Strauss and Mathilda Smit

ADHO offers Conference Bursary Awards to support students and early career scholars in attending the annual conference. DH2025 was held in Lisbon (Portugal) on 14-18 July, and we are happy to share the experiences of the award recipients.

Bursary Awardees Trudie Strauss and Mathilda Smit from the University of the Free State, South Africa in their own words:

We would still love to convey our gratitude for the bursary we received that enabled us to attend DH2025 in Lisbon.

This was an incredible experience for us – to attend such a large international conference, with the most interesting nexus of several fields and disciplines. We connected with colleagues from all across the world and are have learned much about Digital Humanities as a field.

Sharing our own work in this realm was also particularly rewarding as we could engage with feedback from colleagues who have such vastly different backgrounds and all bring another vantage point.  We are excited to get our paper ready for publication and are planning to submit something new for 2026.

We, again, became intensely aware of the importance of the Humanities in the world, and are grateful and excited to witness the way in which the fields of research open build accessibility of open science for all citizens.

We are so thankful for the financial support from ADHO!
