Conference Bursary Awardees about DH2025: Esther Shizgal

ADHO offers Conference Bursary Awards to support students and early career scholars in attending the annual conference. DH2025 was held in Lisbon (Portugal) on 14-18 July, and we are happy to share the experiences of the award recipients.

Among the awardees is Esther Shizgal, a researcher from the Hebrew University of Jerusalem. In Esther’s own words:

“Attending DH2025 in Lisbon was an inspiring experience. Throughout the conference, I saw some fantastic projects — from using diffusion models in archaeology to developing novel computational methods for oral history. I also had the opportunity to participate in an oral session, where I presented my work on Computational Analysis of Religious Journeys

Coming from a computational background, I found the interdisciplinary setting especially valuable. Being in an environment with other computer scientists working in Digital Humanities gave me a sense of belonging to a broader research community, leading to some great discussions and opening doors to potential collaborations. At the same time, connecting with humanistic scholars offered fresh perspectives on which computational tools yet to-be-developed could make meaningful contributions to their fields.

I am grateful to the ADHO for the travel bursary that made this enriching experience possible.”
